Timeless in Silk: The Art of Japanese Kimono Fabrics
September 22
Japanese culture specialist and guest SMOC lecturer Maiko Behr provides an
introduction to the dazzling diversity of traditional kimono silks, offering
an intimate look into minute details of the production process. Featuring
examples from the antique kimono collection and original fashions of
Vancouver collector/designer Fumie Von Dehn, this special show will
trace Japanese silk through centuries-old techniques of craftsmanship
to Western-inspired designs of the early 20th century. Live models
will present contemporary designs that reveal a deep understanding of
and respect for these materials while giving them new life.
This time only, the rare garments seen on stage will also be offered for
sale. The show will be accompanied by a pop-up trunk sale of exclusive
vintage fabrics and fashions, sourced from one-of-a-kind hand-dyed,
hand-woven, and hand-painted Japanese kimono silks from the 1890s to 1960s.
Please note that purchases will be by cash or
cheque only.

An Afternoon with Fumie von Dehn - Designer and Collector of Kimonos
Admission $10. (All money goes to CSAA Programs.)
Fumie will be giving a short talk on the history of the kimono and will describe how she is using this amazing material to make her clothing. She wants as many people as possible to realize how silk is used in many different ways in Japan, for example, how it is woven, how it is dyed, how it is worn and how long it can last. She will also be selling kimonos, silk and her own unique pieces after the talk. Fumie hopes that this event will lead to a greater interest in silk and the kimono in Vancouver.
